5 Day Detox Body Cleanse With Lemon and Maple Syrup

Starvation based on lemon and maple syrup, otherwise known as the lemon diet or master cleanse is a popular way to cleanse the body among thousands of people around the world.

This diet includes a fasting for five days.

During the fasting period you are allowed to only drink lemonade made from lemons, maple syrup, water and cayenne pepper.

Maple tree in Canada is well known for its delicious and nutritious juice. In order to produce one liter of syrup it requires about 40 liters of sap from maple trees.

It is even more nutritious than honey: 100 g of maple syrup contains 64% carbohydrate, 0.4% fat, 0.1% protein, 0.6% minerals, and a calorific value of 275 kcal.

Maple syrup should be consumed during fasting because it gives the body all the necessary nutrients and energy.

You can buy it in almost any health food store. If for any reason you can’t seem to find maple syrup, use honey, agave syrup or barley malt instead.

Lemon is the perfect food for detoxification – it helps eliminate toxins from the body, strengthens the immune system and acts as an antioxidant. Just to be clear, all fruits have a cleaning effect, it’s just that citrus fruits such as lemon and grapefruit are the best for detoxification.

Before fasting you need to prepare your body in a way that for few days you should be eating only soft foods without fat and animal products. That way your body will be ready to withstand the lack of everyday foods and you will have higher starving tolerance.

During the fasting period don’t eat any other foods except the lemonade made from lemon, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. You can also drink herbal teas sweetened with maple syrup or honey.

The best time for the lemon detox diet is summer, when we already consume lighter food.

How to prepare the lemonade

For one glass of lemonade you need:

  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons of maple syrup
  • pinch cayenne pepper
  • 250 ml of water

Mix all the ingredients and immediately drink the lemonade. You can use cold or warm water – according to your own taste. Always use fresh lemons, not lemon concentrates.

Drink 6-10 glasses of lemonade daily. When you feel hunger, drink the lemonade instead of a meal.

Lemonade contains all the necessary nutrients, and cayenne pepper will provide you with extra energy.

In the meantime, you can drink herbal teas as much as you want, unsweetened or sweetened with maple syrup.

Every night before bedtime drink a tea with laxative effect. In the morning drink a liter of salted water (1 liter of water + tablespoon of sea salt). This will help to empty the bowel.

Fasting can last between 5 to 14 days. Minimum duration of lemon detox diet is five days, because the body begins to spew toxins after three days of fasting.

The effects are incredible, this detox diet is really worth the effort! Once you try it and feel its positive effects it might become part of your everyday life.

After the fasting period

After fasting it is important that you gradually include foods into your meals. Your body needs a few days to re-adjust to solid foods. Be sure to follow this regime:

1 day

  • Stop taking lemonade
  • Drink 5-8 glasses of vegetable juice

2 day

  • Drink 3-4 glasses of vegetable juice
  • Eat 1-2 bowls of vegetables (avoid potatoes and carrots)

3 day

  • Continue with eating vegatable soups and drinks
  • Eat a few fruits (whicever you prefer)
  • Eat a pre-soaked nuts or seeds
  • You can eat steamed vegetables and brown rice

4 day

  • You can start eating all other foods

During the cleansing period it is recommend to walk and perform light exercises, because physical activity helps eliminate toxins from the body.
